Fishing Report Oct 2010

Currently flow is at 500 cfs and the flow should stay as such until

2011 spring  (According to BOR email confirmation).

   



Fishing is about the same, still very good to excellent for us.

There have been larger midges and baetis hatches since mid September. Just about everyone still think we're using small flies...

Many of struggling fishermen ask me and my clients what we're using, see CoCo's email below.

The visibility of the river is around 3 feet and sight fishing is the way to go on most places during the day.

Strangely more crowd have been showing up last week or two which translates to dead trout lying on the bottom of most popular holes. *Please practice proper fish handling technique(s)

Looking at the sizes of those dead trout, around 18-19”, my guess is that most of them died due to keeping trout out of water too long for your photo op. Keep the fish in the water up until your snap shot of your trophy! Try to keep the whole process under 10 seconds. Revive them properly before releasing!





The best working flies:

i-Yong Special > i-Yong Blondie >Andy's Candy midge/ baetis > Yong Flash > AK-Salad in order

Note, there will be more baetis hatches rest of the season. So stock up on Yong Wing and Andy's Candy Mayfly flies before you head out to the river!

October caddis is huge according to my brother John.
He was there on the 23rd of October and had a blast during the rain...
He fishes there when ever he goes up to Yosemite National Park.
He and his family was there on a birthday trip for his wife and he was able to drop some
fly on the Merced for 30minutes and landed 7 and unbuttoned 3 in the afternoon two weeks ago.

We sure enjoyed spending the day with you last Friday.  We did well Saturday and Sunday as well using the flies you made for us and the techniques you taught us.  Hope your sciatica is better. As I said I would highly recommend the inversion table which will eliminate your problem.  The brand I recommend is Teeter.  It is the best as far as I’m concerned.  Good luck and tight lines.

Thanks for a great time on the river! I continued setting the hook too hard yesterday most of the times. The interesting part is that when used only wrist, I landed fish. Imaging that! So I am a strong convert to easy setting of the hook now. I will need a lot of practice, though, old bad habits die hard!
Naomi hooked and landed her fist SJ trout on dry fly, Andy's candy, last fish of the day yesterday, just before we were ready to leave. Awesome! She was so thrilled! I think she is hooked on SJ, thanks to you! Hope she will be coming to SJ with me in the future.
I will try to computerize my shooting film of Naomi, and send it to you.

Dear Andy, Thank you so much for an enjoyable time fishing on Tuesday. I also enjoyed watching you mess up my spin cast rod. You actually made me look pretty good. Andy, greetings to you from Corrales on this very pleasant evening here in the high desert of New Mexico.
Thanks so much for sending that series of photos. The bend in that four weight rod tells a story all of its own. I was able to share the photos and part of the trip with Carol. She sends her compliments on your guiding and photography skills.

Also, thanks very much for the really nice tip on fishing below that island in the Kidde Pool. As I mentioned to you, I fished the Texas Hole for about an hour without success. The guides in the boats were having a slow day as well.

I moved upstream and found that location below the island in the Kidde Pool. The place was loaded with feeding trout and the water was crystal clear. I kept thinking, "Boy, I wish Andy was here to see this." I fished for quite awhile and managed to hook several fish. Setting the hook was problematical. After I experienced my third serious tangle, I looked at my watch and thought, I better be heading home.

Can you give me the basics on the leader that you constructed for me? I will take your instructions and tie up a couple of leaders to use for my next trip the San Juan. Hopefully, I will be able to get back up there around the last week of October. Maybe the fall colors will hang around that long.

Fishing Report : Month of September

Hello everyone,




Fishing on the San Juan river has been great and currently fishing great as well. For those who were fortunate enough to get to San Juan river are really enjoying great fishing!
Current Hatches Notes;

There has been some different hatches last few days on the river.

This is the time of the year we use Yong Special, Andy's Candy Mayfly, and Yong Wing flies more often to entice those famous trout on San Juan River.

Good time to stock up now if you're considering coming out to S.J.R anytime soon. 

Well? I expected lots of people on Labor Day long weekend but I was wrong on that assumption. Less crowd gave us good opportunities to visit many other places to fish, and did we ever!

Trout were healthy and fought hard, even those pan sized ones too.Many of them came up for dry fly (Andy's Candy midge).

The flow has been around 800 cfs and my guess is that flow may stay around 800cfs through the fall season  (my educated guesstimation - Based on the reservoir level that I saw few days ago. But it's still up to B.O.R decision.

Spring runoff of 5000cfs has advantages to the river system.
5000 cfs flow will clean out some of the silt build up off the bottom and create more crevices below gravels.

Typically there will be far less fishermen on the river after the Labor Day Holiday weekend, so those of you who wishes to avoid crowds? your time has come! Come join me on the beautiful (uncrowded S.J.R).


There's one major bad news though, as you can see it on these photos below, the Kiddie Hole is severely damaged again.  Damage was caused by Rex Wash from flash flood that occurred night of the 8th .

Those of you following my fishing report already know that I have been advocating just about everyone about this problem to be fixed for last 8 yrs but nothing has been done to prevent it. Sad sight to be hold!

I know that they've tried hard to improve the river by spending lots money on it but core of the problem hasn't been remedied yet based on what you see and what I've seen in the present and the past.

Note, this isn't just Kiddie Hole's problem alone.  Whenever there's uncontrolled flash flood originates, more silt will deposit into Texas Hole and more places downstream. This definitely will damage aquatic insect populations throughout the area affected.

I still remember the good old days when they had the restrooms at Texas Hole Parking lot. Then the fishing was excellent all day long, up and down to bait fishing section area as well, also anywhere gravel bottom was...
We had days where we would catch 20” plus football size trout were normal affair. Since the removal of that
structure, it created river of silt in and around that area now as you can see in above pictures.

We often fished below the Texas hole but now  we fish upper section more often due to silt damages.

The best flies were: Yong Blondie> Yong Special> Andy's Candy Midge>Yong Blood in order

Here's a picture of a nice brown. It was hiding along the edge of a weed bank, had to make a upstream cast, and he came out and just put it in his mouth!



Caught and released a number of really nice size bows as well. The AK-47 fly was working when the YOJ and Yong special shut down. I really appreciate everything you've taught me.

From today on, I'll be using my blog for all of my fishing report(s) and you're welcome to leave your fishing report(s) or comment(s)on the comment section below for everyone to share...

I've met many fly fishers in the past and present (during my guiding career and leisure fishing trips for long as I can remember) on many rivers I cherish and fish. Some say to go fishing means that  they mainly enjoy the scenery, fresh air, and catch few fish during their fishing excursions.Some called it "Bonus" to catch fish (trout)
Yes, I do enjoy fresh air and scenery but my main reason is to catch trout! Let's be honest, who doesn't mind
catching lots of trout when they go fly fishing to their
favorite waters? two is better than one and three is
better than two...and on and on.
Being successful on the river will count for something
when you take off your wader end of the day.
You can reflect back at what you've done while
resting your sore legs and arm (casting arm, especially)

There's one thing that these fishermen have in common. The biggest reason is that they struggle to over come what the river has not reveal to them in many occasions. Simply because of their lack of knowledge and not knowing what else to do to be successful. They just give up and exit the waters. You can't really blame for what they do.But what to do about it is more important than just giving excuses.

If I had a bad day of fishing, then I go home and analyze what happened that day and work on how to improve my success rate for next time out. That is why I have developed 12 fly patterns over last 30 yrs and some of them were exposed on Fly Fisherman magazine and other publications.

It's like some golfers struggling on the golf course saying that “I'm out here for some exercise.” or “I'm here to enjoy this fresh air.”  Bottom line is that they all want to shoot better scores every time they are out on the course but they just don't put in the effort in practicing and studying (lessons if necessary) the method of being good golfers. Same goes for fly fishing, you must put in time and effort to get better fly fisherman therefore try not to make excuses and do something about it.

Well? that being said; I would love to share my knowledge on how to be more successful fly fisher with AK(Andy Kim) Fly Fishing System that I teach to all of my clients of new and repeat clients.

Fishing report on San Juan River, NM (Quality waters)

The fishing on the SJ has been excellent for us as usual.

The river's visibility is still around 3 feet and trout are feeding throughout the day all the way down to bait fishing section of the river.

The weather has been unpredictable for last couple of years but I'd suggest you stow away a rain jacket or a rain poncho in your vest or your chest pack just in case you get some moisture during fishing.

Above the TX Hole: We used mostly Andy's Candy Midge, Yong Special, Yong Blondie, AK-47, and below we used more Yong Wing (baetis). Also other producing patterns are; AK-SS and AK-Salad that produced some large trout up to 25” by Alex Yee who is 11 yrs old from Wisconsin.

 

The best flies were; Yong Special> Yong Blondie> Andy's Candy Midge>Yong Wing  in that order.

I hope you get the reel seat fixed by sage.  I think that a lot of companies are doing the same thing but I do agree for the cost that they are being kinda cheap that way.  Please get the reel seat fixed.  see if they can put in a graphite seat since that is waterproof.  Remember - that was really the first rod in a while that ever challenged you. It still has a long while to go before you stop smiling with that rod in hand... 

my father went fishing yesterday, my mother had him cleaning the carpeting in the house and he had to take a break and went bass fishing.  I think that the trip rejuvenated his interest in fishing a bit... Alex is also at a new level of fishing now and he is having so much more fun.  thanks for being more than just my master... thanks for being family... I'll send more pics, thanks brother  :-)

Too funny Andy.  I can tell you for a fact there were PLENTY of fish in the river.  Maybe they shouldn't all be so damn stubborn and learn how to fish the San Juan from the Master.  I understand he is willing to teach anyone who is willing to listen how to catch trout anywhere in the world.
